Melissa is an herbaceous perennial that grows 20 - 35 inches tall. It has branched, erect, squarish shaped stems. The leaves are oval and serrated and grow opposed on the plant. The flowers (which are either red or white) grow near the stem of the leaves. The crop usually lasts 4-5 years but does very occasionally last up to 8 year.
